Style Q & A with Juliet Elkonin

jocelynterifryer

For this style segment I simply had to feature my teenage cousin, Juliet (otherwise affectionately known as 'Judes')... She is the fairest of our family with ashy strawberry blonde hair and the most glorious of peaches-and-cream complexions and deep blue eyes. Sensual voluptuous curves a little beyond her years and a style that would have to be nineties grunge meets a Jane Austen heroine, she is nothing if not a class act. It's no wonder she asked that her featured image to accompany this post be the timeless classic, Girl with the Pearl Earring - herself so reminiscent of the pale and subtly glowing but striking resonance of a classic string of pearls.

Sooooo...

Without further adieu...

Would you describe your style as a little 'tomboy' or more feminine or just plain mercurial and whatever strikes your fancy? How do you wake up and decide what to wear in other words? And in this, in this process of transformation... What do you think style offers us?

I’d say feminine to just whatever I feel like although I wouldn’t say I’m ever particularly ‘tomboyish’. Style always offers a sense of self-expression.

And further still, what do you think, or moreover feel, about the potential, the power, the impact that clothes may possess when worn 'right'? (And by 'right' I mean hot diggity for the wearer...)

Well, wearing something you really love makes you comfortable in your own skin. It also sets the tone for the day, whether productive or chillaxed.

I love my grandmother's old watch (for all it's stuck on 3:40pm), it's my 'unicorn watch' that completes an outfit when I'm going slick... What's yours? How do you turn a slick trade when ya feel like dressing it up a notch?

I’d say normally earrings are my go-to. And a smidge of lipstick never hurts.

What advice would you give women about being comfortable in their own skins and embracing fashion...? And what was your own journey of self-acceptance and carving out a style for yourself? Did your body feature? Or was it just a secondary afterthought? Wisdom, please!

Just have fun, firstly! I think it’s hard these days for anyone to ever feel a hundred percent happy with themselves with a world of ever-changing trends, but wear what works for you regardless and what makes you feel confident.

Vintage and once loved or straight off the hanger and why?

Vintage definitely because it has a story to it. And it’s eco-friendly and easy on the wallet most times.

Who is your style icon? Though you're so very original... So maybe I should rephrase... Let's say... Who impresses you style-wise to say DAMN GRRRRRL!!

I would have to say Audrey Hepburn, but not necessarily only her style but in the way she always carried herself. Classy. Elegant. Very timeless.

My ensemble is never truly complete until I've rubbed in a little neroli essential oil on all the pulse points... And in your opinion...Fragrance: yay or nay? Take it or leave it? That invisible pashmina... And if yay... What are you wearing? Or what are you most itching to covet?

I like perfume. Although I have to admit I don’t wear it on a daily basis, saving it for special occasion. I like an unassuming scent. Something fresh and not overly floral. I love Elizabeth Arden’s Green Tea with Cherry Blossom.

No wardrobe is ever complete in my mind without a stand out pair of denim jeans to do all the hard work and then some... Which are yours? (Assuming!) How long have you had them for? And what does denim mean to you, period?

I didn’t wear denim jeans for aaages – more a leggings girl. Then I got a pair from my aunt, that I adored! Next a pair from my sister. That changed all that. I also love my super stiff denim jacket though and currently frequently don a pair of mid-waisted wide-legged dark blue jeans with white stitching and decorative ‘handles’ and great pockets– a bargain bin find!

Any recent obsessions? Mine of late are decorative scarves for any and every occasion...Thanks to pillaging my gran's wardrobe... Now I'm a regular Beethoven! Any of your own recently adopted to your effortless routine?

It would HAVE to be boots! I got a pair for Christmas and now my Pinterest is a veritable smorgasbord of beautiful boots!

Finally, be it a jersey knitted just for you... A coveted bargain bin find worth a small fortune... A leather jacket that just redefines an outfit, worn so very often it's become a second skin... What's your little piece of majesty in your wardrobe? That one item so very, very special...?

My green square-necked cropped shirt with puffy sleeves. Jane Austen with a modern twist. I just love it!
